Homemade Holiday: Georgian Gingerbread Houses

December 4, 2012

Now that we’re well into December, it’s safe to really bring out the holiday projects and decorations. So I bring you, drumroll please, Georgian gingerbread houses! Well, more like Georgian gingerbread facades, really. But aren’t they cute?

Last week, I realized I had an old batch of gingerbread dough in the freezer since April. I vaguely remember I wanted to make some sort of Easter gingerbread land. But then I realized that was a terrible idea and left the dough in the freezer for seven months. Since we weren’t planning on eating the gingerbread, I figured it was worth a try rolling them out. Turns out, doesn’t even matter if you leave this gingerbread in the freezer for seven months, it still works a treat! (Although who knows what recipe I used all that time ago, so I can’t even recommend it or replicate it! Bummer!)

I rolled out big rectangles with a rolling pin and used a pizza cutter to cut slightly slanty roofs. Then I used a small knife to cut out doors. I wanted to make colorful doors like typical Georgian houses, so I smashed up some clear hard candy and sprinkled that where the door would be before baking. I put them in the oven for 20 minutes and the candy melted and formed a thin glassy layer. For the red and blue doors, I just added a few drops of food coloring to the crushed candy before baking. They’re quite delicate but I think they look so neat!

Once the houses were baked and cooled, I made up a batch of royal icing (from my friend Caroline over at Bibliocook), from one egg white, a drop of lemon juice and 1 and 7/8 cup of powdered sugar, whisked all together. At Caroline’s suggestion, I poured the icing into a ziplock bag and snipped the corner off. Piping icing has never been my strong point, so it took me several days to get up my nerve! But it was beyond easy and fast!

I even used the royal icing to make the houses stand upright. I had baked a few random triangles of dough and stuck those to the back with royal icing to make them prop up. I was still a little nervous that they’d topple when someone walked by, so I stuck them to our bookshelf with a little sticky tack. When I left for the airport, they were still going strong!

There you have it, Georgian gingerbread houses for the holidays!

Styled in Ireland // It’s Chilly!

November 27, 2012

We’re back with another Styled in Ireland post today – highlighting Irish designers and giving you tips for visiting Dublin or getting out and about as a local.

Tips for Travellers

It has turned chilly here in Dublin, so I thought it would be the perfect time to talk about getting bundled up for the cold. First, you’ll need a great coat. I like the idea of a jacket with a little spunk – there’s nothing more depressing than spending the entire winter waddling around in a purely functional coat. I say mix it up with some studs and a statement collar.

And you’ll need a hat. I was never the biggest fan of hats, but they are now my biggest line of defense against the elements. They protect you from the rain, keep hair out of your eyes in the wind, and keep those ears from getting too frozen. I like these inexpensive little numbers from Penneys – I have this one in three colors! They’re maybe 2 euro, so they’re great way to accessorize.

Now, for that incredible geometric jewellery.

These pieces are the creations of Theresa Burger, and they’re 3D printed nylon. Isn’t that cool? She designs the pieces on a computer and then they’re printed. Printed! I’m not even sure how that quite works, but I love trying to imagine the process. They’re a little pointy but light as a feather and quite sturdy.

Sponsored by the Irish Design Shop

The Irish Design Shop is one of my absolute favorite spots to visit in Dublin. Their main shop is tucked behind the Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre at the top of Grafton Street – in an old building that used to store hay! Now the building houses their beautifully curated shop, filled with jewellery, prints, and various housewares, as well as studio space for fifteen artists and designers. You can even see the studio space from the shop, and owners Clare and Laura are always happy to let people have a peek!

The Irish Design Shop also offers jewellery classes, including one where you can make your own wedding rings! But book quickly – they fill up fast!

You can purchase Theresa Burger’s jewellery at the Irish Design Shop or on their website.

Irish Gift Guide: Holiday Cheer

November 26, 2012

Happy Monday, friends! I hope you all had a nice weekend and/or Thanksgiving, depending on where you were! I took a few days off to celebrate my 29th (!) birthday and have a belated Thanksgiving. It was the first time in a few years that I had my birthday and Thanksgiving in Ireland but it as more festive than I thought it would be, especially considering Michael’s packed basketball schedule!

Now I am in full holiday mode. Michael and I are hosting an open house this weekend so I can see lots of our friends before I leave for a month in America on Sunday! It gives me a good excuse to decorate the house and do a few Christmas projects before I go.

I thought it would be fun to put together a few holiday gift guides using only products and gifts made or designed in Ireland. I’ll be sprinkling them in over the next ten days or so. First up, a little holiday cheer – cards, ornaments and a festive mug! You should be able to order all of them with time to spare before the holidays!

Secret Dublin Speakeasy

November 21, 2012

Last night we tried out the Blind Pig Speakeasy in Dublin. Have you heard of it? It’s a pop up cocktail bar in a secret location that only pops up a few days each month. Doesn’t that sound neat? You make reservations through Twitter or Facebook, then they tell you where to show up only about twelve hours before. You arrive at the location, call a secret phone number and someone comes out to get you and leads you to the secret location where you get to try delicious cocktails. Cool, right?!

We brought Mike’s brother Isaac and his wife Angie – she came prepared in a very 1920’s vintage hat! And no, she didn’t order tea – it’s a cocktail in a mug!

The Blind Pig Speakeasy is Paul Lambert’s invention and I think it’s so clever. He modeled it after secret speakeasies popular in Australia and America, with a cocktail list full of classics with a fresh twist (often literally as well as figuratively!). When you arrive, you’ll find him behind the bar, mixing, shaking, stirring and creating beautiful cocktails. The menu is extensive and if you get a little overwhelmed, he’s happy to help point you in the right direction. Just make sure to read the rules at the back of the menu – don’t ask for a daiquiri!

I feel like I shouldn’t tell you more about the Blind Pig because I don’t want to ruin the surprise for you. Just know that you should try it out next time it pops up (if you follow them on Facebook or Twitter you’ll get the inside scoop on new dates). It’s absolutely as cool as it sounds.

{Faux} Wedding Flowers

November 19, 2012

Last week, I worked on a photo shoot that involved wedding dresses and pretty bouquets (more on that soon!). I was so excited to get to take one of the bouquets home! It is still gorgeous and brightening our living room. Between projects this weekend (and it was full of them!), I took a few pictures of the bouquet in a vintage Ball jar that was a gift from one of my favorite China Village neighbors last year. Happy Monday to you all!

November Desktop Wallpaper

November 15, 2012

A few weeks ago, I discovered how fun it is to change the desktop background on my computer. I had forgotten about it and realized the image had been there for way too long! Since I spend so much time on my computer, it’s really nice to see something sweet and inspiring as the desktop wallpaper. I thought it would be so fun to give you all a new desktop wallpaper every few months – something a little Irish, a little inspiring, a lot pretty, and totally free!

So, I collaborated with the fabulous Julie of Half a Dream Away Photography to put together a downloadable From China Village desktop wallpaper for you. How sweet is that little tea cup? And I thought this quote was a great reminder to remember the power of your own imagination. I love the idea of sitting down with a cup of tea (or coffee!) and imagining up a whole voyage.

Tell me, where would you go on your voyage? Who would you see? And what’s living on your desktop at the moment?

Click here to open the image. Then right click (or control click on Macs!) on the image and select Set as Desktop Background. Don’t worry, it doesn’t say From China Village at the bottom when you download it! Enjoy!

Styled in Ireland / Afternoon Tea

November 15, 2012

We’re back with another Styled in Ireland post today – highlighting Irish designers and giving you tips for visiting Dublin or getting out and about as a local.

Tips for Travellers

In honor of our week celebrating tea, this Styled in Ireland post is all about afternoon tea. I was so excited to be able to snap a few photos at the Four Seasons’ new tea lounge earlier in the week. I had the opportunity to try their afternoon tea a few weeks ago, so I jumped at the chance to go back and try a few more of their treats!

(Ed: The Four Seasons has been bought by the Intercontinental Hotel chain, their tea options remain fancy and they bring out new concepts often!)

Fancy afternoon tea isn’t something the Irish partake in every day, but it’s perfect for an occasion. I’d recommend dressing up just a little; I chose a deep purple Banana Republic dress from my closet and paired it with a wide belt, black tights and black booties, which you can’t see in the photos. Comfortable, but not too casual. After all, why not embrace a little fanciness?

Before my visit to the Four Seasons, I had never tried afternoon tea and I was a little nervous that it would be quite formal. But while the staff at the Four Seasons is very attentive, the whole scene doesn’t feel overly formal at all. The tea lounge has a cozy fireplace and a view of the courtyard. You can order a tea or coffee on its own or the full afternoon tea. And the sweet staff will walk you through the whole thing if you’re a little new like me! Now I’ve turned into a huge proponent of afternoon tea – it’s moved high on my list of recommendations for visitors. And certainly, if they need a guide, I’ll be happy to help!

Here’s how it works: You’ll need to choose a kind of tea from the long list. I loved their vanilla tea but their regular black tea is delicious too. They’ll serve loose tea in a pot and you wait for it to steep for at least a few minutes. Place the little tea strainer over your cup and pour through it. Then, if you like, add a cube of sugar (typically, white is for tea, brown is for coffee) and a drop of milk.

Then sit back, relax, and try all of the delicate nibbles from the silver tiered tray. My favorite selection is a scone with clotted cream and raspberry jam, and then their miniature carrot cupcake. Oh, and the teeny tiny creme brulee. And maybe the pistachio biscuit with fresh raspberries. They’re all very, very tempting.

Sponsored by the Four Seasons Hotel Dublin

Thank you to the Four Seasons Hotel in Dublin for their generous hospitality this week. I’d highly recommend their afternoon tea. It’s perfect for a relaxing afternoon, cozied up in front of a fire with a pot of tea!
